Substrate Preparation

Substrate preparation is divided into two sub-categories to fit your particular situation, those categories are: New Construction and Re-roof conditions. Please review the section appropriate for your project.

New Construction or Reroof following removal of the original roof:

  1. Inspect the roof deck. Identify any fasteners that may not be installed completely flush with the substrate. If you identify any raised fasteners, finish installing them until they are flush or counter-sunk into the roof deck surface.
  2. Identify any areas of loose roof deck. If you locate an area of loose roof deck, fasten the deck material to the structural framework with an appropriate fastener to construction industry standards.
  3. Sweep the deck to remove any dirt or debris.
  4. If you intend to install a compatible rigid insulation in your roof assembly, install a wood nailer at the edge of the roof deck equal in thickness to the rigid insulation. The width of the wood nailer should be ½” wider than the flange of the metalwork you intend to install along the roof edge. If you intend to use an alternate GenTite detail to terminate your roof that does not include metalwork, the nailer should be 3 ½” wide. Installation of any wood nailer should be with a fastener appropriate for the substrate material and capable of providing sufficient anchorage to prevent 200 lb of force from any direction removing the wood nailer. The installed alignment of the wood nailer must be flush with the outer edge of the roof surface.
  5. If a compatible rigid insulation is to be installed, position the insulation tightly to the wood nailer described in the paragraph above with no gaps greater than ¼”, and secure to the roof deck with GenTite fasteners and insulation plates available through your GenTite retailer. Follow the insulation manufacturer’s recommendations for fastener spacing and layout. If the insulation securement pattern cannot be found, install one GenTite fastener and insulation plate per two square feet of insulation in the pattern below.
  6. If insulation has been installed, sweep the insulation surface to remove any loose insulation debris before proceeding to roof application.

Reroof Application over an existing roof:

  1. Sweep the roof to remove any dirt or debris.
  2. Cut out any wet roofing and discard.
  3. Verify the roof deck is sound. If damaged or rotted decking is identified then remove and replace all damaged decking material with new like material. Keep in mind that if you find damaged decking the structural framing members may also be damaged to the point of requiring replacement and the project scope could grow exponentially – do not open more deck than be repaired and roofed during your workday.
  4. Install a wood nailer at the edge of the roof deck equal in thickness to the compatible rigid insulation you intend to install.
  5. Position the compatible rigid insulation tightly to the wood nailer described in the paragraph above with no gaps greater than ¼”, and secure to the roof deck with GenTite fasteners and insulation plates available through your GenTite retailer. Follow the insulation manufacturer’s recommendations for fastener spacing and layout. If the insulation securement pattern cannot be found, install one GenTite fastener and insulation plate per two square feet of insulation in the pattern below.
  6. Once the insulation has been installed, sweep the insulation surface to remove any loose insulation debris before proceeding to roof application.
